STD Testing Q & A

Why do I need STD testing?

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections that spread from person to person through sexual contact, including vaginally, orally, or anally. If left untreated, STDs can infect any of your sexual partners and increase your risk for serious health complications.

To stop the spread of STDs and protect both your sexual and reproductive wellness, Sync Health offers in-office STD testing services.

As a sexual wellness specialist, Angelia can also provide educational resources that protect you from STDs and their potential complications.

When should I schedule STD testing?

You should schedule STD testing whenever you have unprotected sex with a partner whose sexual history you don’t know. Sexually active adolescents and adults should also schedule a STD test before having sex with a new partner.

If you have any symptoms of an STD, don’t put off an evaluation to prevent the worsening of the infection. STD symptoms can include:

  • Genital warts
  • Abdominal pain
  • Vaginal itching
  • Vaginal discharge
  • Pain during sex
  • Burning or pain during urination
  • Bleeding between periods

Angelia can determine which STD tests you should have based on your symptoms, your medical history, and your lifestyle.

What’s involved in STD testing?

Typically, STD testing involves blood work or urine tests to identify infections in your reproductive tract. Angelia also performs a pelvic exam to check for genital warts that develop because of herpes or human papillomavirus (HPV) infections.

If any of your tests are positive, Angelia customizes a treatment plan to clear the infection. For bacterial infections like chlamydia or syphilis, you may need to take antibiotics. If you have herpes, a type of viral infection, you may benefit from antiviral medications.

Angelia also offers resources to help you practice safe sex, so you can reduce your risk for additional STD infections. You should wear condoms every time you have sex with a new partner or with someone who has an STD.

You may need to schedule a follow-up visit to ensure your treatment is working. Angelia can also recommend how often you need follow-up STD testing based on your sexual preferences and lifestyle.
