Menopause Q & A

What is menopause?

Menopause is a natural time in a woman’s life that signals the end of her childbearing years. To achieve full menopause, you must go without a period for 12 consecutive months. Before that happens, you go through a phase known as perimenopause.

Perimenopause is the transition time before your periods stop for good, which can start up to 10 years before you reach full menopause.

During this time, your body slows down its production of estrogen and other reproductive hormones. As your hormone levels begin fluctuating dramatically, your periods start to change and will eventually stop.

Hormone fluctuations can also lead to a wide range of symptoms that affect your physical, mental, and sexual health.

When should I seek treatment for menopause?

Some women go through menopause without any noticeable symptoms except for their period becoming irregular. However, many women also experience menopause-related symptoms that range from mild to debilitating.

On average, women reach menopause in their early 50s but can start experiencing related symptoms in their late 30s or early 40s. If you undergo treatment for certain cancers or have a hysterectomy, you may go through a medically induced menopause regardless of your age.

Angelia recommends scheduling a menopause evaluation if you have persistent menopause issues that interfere with your health or quality of life. Symptoms that are common in perimenopause and menopause include:

  • Hot flashes
  • Night sweats
  • Vaginal dryness
  • Painful sex
  • Weight gain
  • Irregular or heavy periods
  • Mood swings
  • Anxiety or depression

Sync Health offers compassionate menopause care for women who need long-lasting symptom relief during their menopause transition. Angelia creates individual treatment plans to meet your needs and restore your sense of well-being.

How are menopause symptoms treated?

Most menopause symptoms occur because of the gradual decline in your estrogen levels. While there’s nothing you can do to avoid the menopause transition, there are treatments available to make this phase of your life less challenging.

Sync Health offers counseling services, medications, and hormone replacement therapy to relieve the severity of your symptoms.

Angelia may prescribe low-dose birth control pills or supplemental hormones to stabilize your reproductive hormone levels during or after your menopause transition. She can also recommend lifestyle and diet changes that support your overall health and wellness in your post-menopausal years.
